Building waste thought to contain asbestos dumped outside Sydney childcare centre

Building waste believed to contain asbestos has been dumped outside an early-learning centre in Sydney's west, one of four locations in the area where the debris was discovered on Friday morning.

The City of Parramatta Council has launched an investigation after the material was dumped illegally in North Parramatta, Granville, Silverwater and Rydalmere overnight.

The council was alerted about 7am on Friday that one tonne of waste had been discovered on the road outside the early-learning centre on Isabella Street in North Parramatta.

Between 10.30am and 10.40am, the council received three other reports of illegally dumped material on suburban streets.

A council spokeswoman said up to eight tonnes of waste was discovered on Beaconsfield Street in Silverwater, two tonnes on Pike Street in Rydalmere, and an undetermined amount on East Street in Granville.

"All of them have consisted of mixed building waste and are believed to have contained asbestos," the council spokeswoman said.

"Fire and Rescue NSW have attended all the sites and rendered the scenes safe."

The council and the NSW Environment Protection Authority are investigating who is responsible for dumping the waste.

The maximum penalty for an individual for wilfully dumping asbestos-contaminated waste is a $1 million fine and/or seven years' prison, while the maximum fine for a corporation is $5 million, the council said.
