Excavator brought in as search for Matthew Leveson's body continues

An excavator is being used in a remote section of the Royal National Park where the search for the body of Matthew Leveson resumed on Friday morning.

The search comes after Mr Leveson's former boyfriend, Michael Atkins, 53, led police to a possible burial site in the early hours of Thursday.

Mr Leveson, 20, was last seen leaving Sydney nightclub ARQ with Mr Atkins in September 2007.

Detectives attached to Strike Force Bowditch arrived at the possible burial site at 7.45am on Friday, followed shortly by the NSW Police dog squad.

Police from Sutherland Local Area Command have been guarding the section of bushland off The McKell Avenue at Waterfall overnight.

Up to a dozen police officers have joined the search with more expected throughout the day.
