The man was fishing off rocks at Cape Solander when he was swept into the ocean.

It is believed the man, aged in his 50s, was not wearing a jacket at the time.

The extensive rescue operation includes involvement local police officers, Surf Life Saving and Marine Area Command.

Following the incident, police have urged rock fishermen to always wear a life jacket while fishing, check weather and surf conditions before leaving home, and never to fish alone.

The rescue operation comes just two weeks after the Minister for Emergency Services David Elliott announced a 12-month trial of mandatory life jackets for rock fishers in Randwick Council in Sydney's eastern suburbs.

According to the minister, 10 people drowned in rock fishing incidents in NSW in 2015-16; but none were wearing life jackets.

More to come.
