Senior Brothers For Life members found guilty over bloody shootings on Sydney streets

A former kingpin in the street gang Brothers For Life, and three other senior figures, have been found guilty over a string of bloody shootings that transpired during the group's violent unravelling.

For the past six months, the internal and violent feuding of the now-disbanded BFL group have been laid bare in the NSW Supreme Court – drive-by shootings, organised hits and a teenager caught in the crossfire of an internal gang war that plagued the city's south-west.

However a series of non-publication orders have prevented the case from being reported.

After a jury reached verdicts on 18 charges against four men, Justice Peter Hamill allowed some orders to be lifted on Friday.

Among the raft of convictions handed down were those against the former Blacktown chapter leader Farhad Qaumi. "The Afghan" was appointed as the BFL's "general" in 2012 by gang figurehead and Supermax inmate Bassam Hamzy.

Farhad, 34, along with brothers Mumtaz, 31, and Jamil Qaumi, 24, were found guilty of conspiring to murder Bankstown chapter leader Mohammed Hamzy in 2013.

This was the plan when gunmen opened fire at the Hamzy home in Revesby Heights on October 29, 2013.

However it was Hamzy's cousin, Mahmoud Hamzy, who was killed instead.

Friend Omar Ajaj, a man with MEOCS tattooed across his neck, was also injured in the garage ambush.

Farhad and his brothers were all found guilty of manslaughter and causing grievous bodily harm.

The trio were also convicted of soliciting someone to kill Michael Odisho less than a week later.

Odisho, whose tattoos denote his own gang allegiances, was shot outside his Winston Hills home on November 3, 2013 but survived.

The Qaumis were convicted of shooting with intent to murder.

On November 4, 2013, a 13-year-old girl was shot in the back after a group of men knocked on the door of her Blacktown home and demanded to see her brother.

She was shot through the front door, but survived. The intended target was her sibling, a low-ranking Brothers for Life member.

While Farhad and Jamil were found guilty of organising someone to murder the amateur BFL member, all three were convicted of causing grievous bodily harm to the teen.

Three days later Abdul Abu-Mahmoud was shot in a drive-by shooting outside the Chokolatta Cafe in Bankstown.

Just after midnight on November 7, Mumtaz and Jamil allegedly stormed Mr Abu-Mahmoud's car with machine guns, firing through its windows so ferociously they destroyed a headrest.

Miraculously, the three men inside – Mr Abu-Mahmoud, Khalil Khalil and Hassan Soueid – survived.

The court had previously heard Mr Abu-Mahmoud was targeted because the Blacktown BFL members thought he had links to a real estate agency that could find out Farhad's address.

Intercepted phone calls captured Farhad's loyal cronies talking of the need to "protect our leader".

Farhad and Mumtaz Qaumi were also found guilty of a drive-by shooting at Greenacre, targeting a home on November 29, 2013.

The brothers were also convicted over separate firearm possession offences, including of a sawn-off pump action shotgun and a revolver.
