A man who allegedly murdered his partner by stabbing her multiple times came to the attention of police after he crashed his car on Saturday night.

Police discovered the 51-year-old man with facial injuries when they were called to a single vehicle crash on Macquarie Road at Fassifern about 10pm.

After investigations at the scene, officers went to the man's home in Toronto and discovered the body of his 67-year-old female partner.

Police said the woman had been stabbed a number of times "in what's believed to be a domestic incident."

The man was taken to John Hunter Hospital for assessment before being taken to Belmont police station where he was charged with murder.

He was refused bail and due to appear at Newcastle Local Court today.

A crime scene remains in place at the home on Sunday and investigations by Lake Macquarie detectives and the Homicide Squad are continuing.
