Fire fills sky over Circular Quay with smoke ahead of NYE celebrations

New Year's Eve revellers at Circular Quay have been granted a bit of early excitement as a large plume of smoke rose over the area, stemming from a fire near the Cahill expressway.

Fairfax Media understands police attended what was believed to be a fat fire at a kitchen of a nearby hotel.

Despite the dramatic vision of smoke, the situation is understood to be under control and poses no threat to tonight's celebrations.

New South Wales Police posted an update on their facebook page confirming firefighters were responding to an incident, advising the public to remain calm.
