Garry Steven Davis has been jailed for at least 30 years jail for murdering two residents of a NSW nursing home, and attempting to murder a third, after giving them doses of insulin.
He was sentenced to a maximum of 40 years' jail with a non-parole period of 30 years.
Davis, 29, was found guilty in Newcastle Supreme Court in September of the murder of Gwen Fowler, 83, and Ryan Kelly, 80, and the attempted murder of Audrey Manuel, 91 at the SummitCare nursing home in Wallsend. Ms Manuel survived the ordeal, but died later of unrelated causes.
For two days in October, 2013, Davis began injecting elderly residents with lethal doses of insulin.
A motive for the killings remains unknown.
In his sentencing judgment summary, Justice Robert Allan Hulme said that "it was established beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Davis injected each of the victims with an intention to kill.
"He maintained his innocence and exercised his right of silence in the trial and in the sentence proceedings. Accordingly, it remains a complete mystery, the Court observed, why he carried out these abominable crimes and why he chose these particular victims.
"The offences were aggravated by the extreme breach of trust involved in his crimes as well as the vulnerability of the victims. It was evident that there was some thought and preparation involved in the offences but it was impossible to determine the extent."
More to come.
