A Mercedes has crashed into six other cars in a prolonged accident on the main street of one of Sydney's most exclusive suburbs.

The blue Mercedes, driven by a 71-year-old man, ran into another car while driving through the Cross City Tunnel about 2.30pm on Friday, police said.

The driver continued to drive along Bayswater Road in Rushcutters Bay where he hit two parked cars.

The force of those crashes ripped off the car's front wheel, but the car continued driving along the road before crashing head-on into a Ford Fiesta.

Both cars then crashed into two others parked along the road, police said.

The Mercedes finally came to a stop with its bumper wedged underneath that of a parked ute.

The driver was taken to St Vincent's Hospital with injuries to his chest and stomach. He is listed as being in a serious condition.

Bayswater Road and McLachlan Avenue were closed for two hours.
