A woman who was killed when her bike collided with a car on Sydney's north shore has been remembered as a promising young doctor who was due to start at Royal North Shore Hospital in a few weeks.
Dr Ann Formaz-Preston, 33, was riding with a small group of friends on Mona Vale Road in Pymble on Sunday when she was hit by the car at the intersection of Woodlands Avenue just after 10am.
Despite the efforts of paramedics and bystanders, the Canadian expat died at the scene.
Her long-term partner Christopher Vanneste has remembered his "best friend" as a lover of fitness who had been accepted to train in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
The pair moved to Sydney six years ago so Dr Formaz-Preston could start medical school at the University of Sydney.
"She was placed at the SAN [Sydney Adventist Hospital] and often used her bike to get to the hospital from our apartment on the lower north shore," Mr Vanneste told Fairfax Media on Monday. "She was an avid cyclist and completed a full Ironman [triathlon] in Canada."
The 33-year-old was also a keen runner who trained with the Northside Running Group.
"She made many close friends, who she was with on the day the accident happened," Mr Vanneste said.
"We got our permanent residence last year and we were in process of applying for citizenship."
Mr Vanneste urged people to take more care on the roads following the fatal accident, and said there should be an investigation into the crash.
"We need to change our language to 'people on bikes' and 'people in cars', rather than this war on cyclists vs drivers," he said.
"Road users are people with families and friends who care about them.
We got our permanent residence last year and we were in process of applying for citizenship.
Christopher Vanneste
"Two people were involved in this crash, but hundreds of people will be affected by this accident. A little more care and patience will go a long way to decreasing these terrible road tragedies."
He said he hopes the intersection where the crash happened is investigated.
"If it led to the cause of the crash, [I hope] that changes are made before it is allowed to happen again."
The driver of a Toyota Corolla sedan involved in the crash, a 37-year-old man, underwent mandatory drug and alcohol testing on Sunday.
A NSW Police spokeswoman said that investigations into the crash are continuing.
A brief will be prepared for the Coroner.
