Five people died across NSW and more than 14,000 infringements were issued throughout the long weekend, police said.

Just one person died during the same long weekend period last year.

Acting Assistant Commissioner David Driver of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said that despite the extra police presence as part of 'Operation Slow Down', it was disheartening to see people continue to speed or drive dangerously.

More than 6201 people were booked for speeding over the long weekend.

The total number of deaths on NSW roads so far this year is now 290, seven less than at the same time last year.

Two people also died over the weekend on private properties in NSW.

The road toll in the ACT currently stands at five.
