Police were told the bucket of an excavator came off and hit the car, causing it to roll.

The female driver of the car was trapped by her injuries and three fire crews worked to release her, a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.

The 25-year-old woman was then treated by paramedics at the scene for cuts to her face and head and a possible arm fracture before she was taken to Liverpool Hospital, the ambulance spokesman said.

Two of three eastbound lanes were initially closed just past Heathcote Road, and while all lanes were reopened after 8am, traffic was queued for more than 13 kilometres by about 8.15am.

Motorists were being advised to avoid the area and use alternate routes.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, and appealing for witnesses to the crash to contact Crime Stoppers.
