Sydney weather: hot and humid for western Sydney and west of NSW

The west of New South Wales will be hit by higher temperatures in the coming days before cooling off midweek, as a hot air mass moves towards Sydney.

As the tropical low sweeping through Western Australia gets close, a heatwave will move from Broken Hill and Wentworth in the far west of NSW through to the central tablelands.

The western suburbs are expected to heat up the most in Sydney, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

A low intensity heatwave in western Sydney during the first half of the week will turn severe.

Temperatures will rise gradually from 35 degrees on Monday to the low 40s on Thursday.

Penrith is expected to reach 43 degrees on Friday as the hot air mass hits Sydney, dropping to 30 degrees over the weekend as humid conditions settle in.

The bureau forecasts milder weather for the CBD, with sea breezes keeping the temperature at 29 degrees on Monday and Tuesday, a slight increase to 30 degrees on Wednesday and hitting a maximum of 38 degrees on Thursday. 

The heat will ease off in the city over the weekend, down to the high 20s or low 30s, dependant on sea breezes. 

However, western Sydney is set to stay hot, with temperatures expected to stay in the high 30s. 

Thunderstorms are possible for outer western Sydney suburbs such as Camden over the next few days, with a chance of isolated storms in the southern and western ranges of NSW.

Areas around Byron Bay in the state's north-east are expected to get showers coming in from the ocean.

Residents in the south of NSW are advised to keep an eye on fire danger throughout the week, Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Rob Taggart says.

"Keep up with what the Rural Fire Service is saying and look out for total fire bans," he says.
